JIGSAW
PUZZLE ACTIVITY

For this
activity students will be using a cooperative learning approach called
the "Jigsaw Technique". Students will be broken into
groups of four with each group member responsible for reading an set
of articles about the Dawn Marie Westley case. Each
student will prepare a summary of the information found in their
particular article. They will be considered the "expert" on
this article. Each group will appoint a leader who will help facilitate
the group activities.
Students may
need instruction regarding how to write a correct summary. This
instruction sheet can be located at the link below:
HOW
TO WRITE A
SUMMARY

Once the
summaries are complete, the experts will gather together in a
temporary group with students who were assigned to the same article
that they were. These experts will be given time to discuss the main points
of their summaries and will add to or adjust their statements so that
the information is clear and informative. The experts will rehearse how they
will present their information back to their jigsaw group.
Students
will rejoin their jigsaw group and present their segment to the
group. The group should ask questions for clarification.
Teachers
should float through the groups and observe the process and provide
suggestions.
Once the
individual presentations have been made, gather class back together
again to discuss what the class has learned about this topic.
